Sugar Land investing $17.3 million to replace aging fire, EMS fleet

When a fire truck pulls out of a station in Sugar Land, there is no room for mechanical failure. To ensure that first responders remain ready for any crisis, the city is committing 17.3 million dollars in bond funding to replace and rebuild its aging fire and EMS fleet over the coming years. This investment aims to keep pace with a rapidly developing community where reliability is the highest priority.

City officials do not rely on age alone to determine when a vehicle should be retired. According to Fire Chief Mark Campise, the department carefully monitors repair costs, total mileage, engine hours, and how often a truck is sidelined for maintenance. While frontline apparatus typically serve for ten to fifteen years before being moved to reserve status, keeping them operational during those peak years is critical so that coverage never lapses during an emergency.

A prime example of this modernization is the recently acquired Ladder 7, a two million dollar piece of equipment specifically designed for a tightening urban environment. The truck features a specialized rear steer system that allows it to navigate narrow spaces more effectively. With about ninety six percent of Sugar Land already built out, future growth will likely involve denser redevelopment, making maneuverability essential for crews trying to reach patients and fires in crowded neighborhoods.

Maintaining such a fleet has become significantly more expensive in recent years, with Chief Campise noting that the price of new apparatus has nearly doubled since 2020. Because these vehicles are custom built and often take years to deliver after an order is placed, proactive planning has become a necessity rather than a luxury. For the people living in Sugar Land, however, the technical specifications matter less than the result. As the chief put it, residents simply want to know that when they call for help, the truck shows up and it works.
