Live Updates: Diesel hits record $6 a gallon as, reports say, Houthis take key territory along Red Sea

Global energy markets are reeling today as diesel prices climbed to a record six dollars a gallon, a spike triggered by intensifying conflict across the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. The surge comes amid reports that Houthi forces have effectively seized total control of the Bab el-Mandeb strait, capturing the final remaining islands in the corridor. Military officials from the recognized Yemeni government admit that their western coastal defenses have collapsed, leaving a vital global shipping artery under the thumb of Iran’s proxies.

The volatility is further compounded by a deepening deadlock over the Strait of Hormuz. While the United States has made some gains in loosening Iran’s grip on the waterway, Tehran continues to demand permissions and service fees for passing vessels, frequently targeting those that refuse to comply with drones and missiles. With Brent crude soaring past 105 dollars a barrel, analysts warn that what was intended to be a short conflict has evolved into a protracted war of attrition with no clear exit strategy in sight.

Diplomatic efforts are attempting to keep pace with the chaos, with Iran scheduled to meet Gulf states in Oman this coming Monday to discuss regional security and the management of the strait. Meanwhile, behind closed doors, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has reportedly urged President Trump to launch direct military strikes against the Houthis to halt their rapid advance along the coast. Despite these pleas, the White House has remained hesitant to commit boots on the ground or aircraft to direct combat, opting instead for intelligence and targeting support.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth underscored the ideological nature of the struggle during a ceremony at the Pentagon on Friday, framing the conflict as a necessary battle against an Islamic theocracy. However, experts suggest that while US sanctions have crippled Iran’s economy, they have not yet sparked internal collapse. Instead, there are growing fears that pushing Iranian leadership too far into a corner may trigger even greater escalations throughout the Middle East just as domestic inflation begins to bite consumers at the pump.
