Georgia Tech Stock Report: Who is Rising and Falling After Week 1

Georgia Tech entered the season with high hopes, but their opening clash against Colorado proved to be a sobering wake-up call. While the Yellow Jackets had several opportunities to secure a victory, they lacked the execution necessary to close the deal, leaving head coach Brent Key facing a daunting task as he prepares for a matchup against number twenty Tennessee. In the aftermath of the loss, the mood around Bobby Dodd Stadium is mixed, with a few bright spots emerging amid widespread concerns about the team’s fundamental strengths.

Among those seeing their value rise is quarterback Alberto Mendoza. Making his first career start, Mendoza provided one of the few silver linings by completing seventeen of twenty-three passes for 237 yards without turning over the ball. Although he failed to find the end zone or provide any threat on the ground, his poise and processing speed suggested he belongs under center. Similarly, sophomore safety Tae Harris impressed in the secondary, recording eight tackles and earning high marks from Pro Football Focus. On the offensive side of the ball, former cornerback Dalen Penson looked comfortable in his new role as a wide receiver, highlighted by a forty-two yard reception that nearly shifted the momentum of the game.

Conversely, many units experienced a sharp decline in confidence following Thursday night’s disaster. Most alarming was the collapse of the rushing attack and its supporting cast. Despite preseason hype surrounding runners like Justice Haynes and Malachi Hosley, Georgia Tech managed a meager fifty-one yards on thirty carries. This struggle was exacerbated by what may be the worst offensive line performance of Brent Key’s tenure; poor pass protection left Mendoza vulnerable to three sacks and resulted in dismal grades for key linemen including Ethan Mackenny and Jameson Riggs.

The struggles extended to the other side of scrimmage where Georgia Tech’s front seven failed to live up to offseason promises of physicality. The defensive line struggled throughout the contest, finishing with zero percent run stuff rate and managing only one sack while allowing Colorado to dictate the tempo in critical late-game moments. As these struggling units prepare for an even more formidable Tennessee defense, it is clear that significant adjustments must be made quickly if Atlanta wants to avoid an early seasonal slide.
