A Billion Dollar Lesson In Maternal Care Drives New Philanthropic Push

Olivia Walton is turning a personal struggle with the American healthcare system into a massive philanthropic crusade. The Walmart heiress and CEO of Ingeborg Investments recently announced the launch of her nonprofit, Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies America, committing 100 million dollars over the next five years. Her ambitious goal is to slash the United States maternal mortality rate in half, a mission born from her own experiences as a mother of three who found significant gaps in postpartum care despite her immense wealth and education.

Speaking at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women conference, Walton revealed that her eyes were opened during the birth of her second child in 2020. Living in Arkansas, she discovered that her home state suffers from some of the worst maternal health outcomes in the nation, with mortality rates nearly double the national average and comparable to those in Cuba. She highlighted a particularly grim reality for women of color, noting that Black and brown women face death from childbirth complications at three times the rate of white women. For Walton, these statistics represent a failure of political will rather than a lack of medical science.

The initiative led by Olivia and her husband, Tom Walton, aims to be a bipartisan effort focused on systemic change through storytelling, advocacy and strategic grants. To kickstart these efforts, Arkansas and Kansas are each slated to receive 10 million dollars to bolster their local health infrastructure. This funding arrives at a critical time as potential Medicaid cuts and billing changes threaten to further destabilize prenatal and postnatal services across the country.

Beyond direct financial injections into state systems, Walton is calling for a broader cultural shift in how businesses treat expectant parents. She believes that increasing the number of midwives and doulas is essential to saving lives and urged self-insured corporations to expand their pregnancy benefits. According to Walton, improving perinatal care is not just a moral imperative but a savvy business move that reduces long term costs while ensuring healthier families for everyone involved regardless of their political leanings.
