High Stakes Gamble as AI Spending Fatigue Hits Wall Street

Wall Street experienced a sharp retreat on Friday as a wave of disappointing corporate reports sent shockwaves through the technology sector. The rout was led by Intel, whose shares plummeted 31 percent after the chipmaker issued a bleak revenue forecast for the fourth quarter. Analysts pointed toward stagnant demand for CPUs and rising memory chip costs as primary drivers for the slump, leaving investors worried about the fundamental health of traditional hardware markets.

The volatility extended to e-commerce giant Amazon, which saw its stock slide over five percent after missing third-quarter estimates and reporting a staggering surge in negative free cash flow. This downturn followed closely on the heels of Alphabet’s worst single session in history, creating a climate of fear that rippled across the broader market. Even newer public players like Reddit felt the sting, with shares tumbling 30 percent amid warnings that AI-driven changes to search engines are eating into critical referral traffic.

Beyond individual company failures, a deeper anxiety is taking hold regarding the astronomical cost of the artificial intelligence arms race. With industry titans spending hundreds of billions of dollars on infrastructure, analysts warn that shareholders are losing patience with the lack of a clear roadmap for returns. The financial burden is becoming impossible to ignore, with some estimates suggesting total annual spending among top firms could approach 735 billion dollars.

This skepticism triggered a contagion effect that reached far beyond Silicon Valley, dragging down semiconductor leaders like Nvidia and Broadcom and hitting international giants such as Samsung and SK Hynix. As trillions of dollars in market value evaporate from recent peaks, the prevailing sentiment suggests that while big tech remains convinced AI will transform civilization, investors are beginning to wonder if the price tag is simply too high to justify.
