Gold and Global Assets Fuel Massive Third Quarter Gain for Swiss Central Bank

The Swiss National Bank has reported a substantial profit of 19.1 billion Swiss francs, roughly 23.3 billion dollars, for the third quarter, largely fueled by its strategic holdings in gold and foreign currency. This latest surge brings the institution’s total profit for the year to approximately 44.2 billion francs, creating a strong possibility that the bank will issue significant payouts to federal and local governments across Switzerland by the end of December.

While these figures remain impressive, they actually represent a nearly 32 percent drop compared to the same period last year. Much of this fluctuation stems from the volatility of precious metals; whereas gold experienced a historic rally in 2025, prices have dipped more than seven percent so far this year. Additionally, gains from foreign currency positions and international equities fell about 15 percent year on year, reflecting a shifting global economic landscape and fluctuations in the value of the Swiss franc against the U.S. dollar.

What sets the Swiss National Bank apart from peers like the U.S. Federal Reserve is its aggressive approach to diversification, particularly its massive portfolio of international equities. Rather than picking individual winners, the bank acts as a passive investor following broad indices of developed markets. Currently, about 61 percent of its reserves are held in government bonds and central bank deposits, while nearly a third is invested in stocks, with heavy exposure to both euros and dollars.

Despite these eye popping numbers, officials emphasize that making money is not their primary mission. Unlike a private corporation, the bank’s core objective is maintaining price stability within Switzerland through a strict inflation target of zero to two percent. The SNB maintains that its monetary policy mandates always take precedence over financial returns, meaning it is willing to accept losses if such moves are necessary to protect the national economy.
