AI Spending Spree Leaves Investors Shaken as Alphabet Shares Crater

Investors sent Alphabet shares into a tailspin on Thursday morning, with the stock plummeting 13 percent shortly after the opening bell. If the slide continues through the closing bell, the company is staring down its steepest single day of losses since going public in 2004. While fellow tech titan Microsoft managed to stay relatively flat, Alphabet became the focal point of market anxiety over how these giants are financing the expensive race toward artificial intelligence.

The primary driver of the selloff appears to be a jarring disconnect in financial health, specifically regarding free cash flow. Alphabet stunned analysts by reporting a negative free cash flow of 9.07 billion dollars for the third quarter, far worse than the modest dip experts had anticipated. Despite this, the parent company of Google intends to stick to its massive annual spending plan, projecting capital expenditures between 195 billion and 205 billion dollars. This aggressive spending spree suggests that Alphabet is doubling down on infrastructure even as immediate returns remain elusive.

Adding to the turmoil is evidence that Google’s crown jewel, search advertising, is starting to feel the heat from competitors. Although revenue grew by 12 percent to reach over 63 billion dollars, it still missed analyst targets. Company executives admitted that monetization within their new AI modes has been sluggish, coinciding with a broader trend where users increasingly turn to rivals like ChatGPT and Claude for information instead of traditional search queries.

Market observers suggest that Alphabet is currently trapped in an innovator’s dilemma, struggling to balance its legacy search dominance with the disruptive nature of generative AI. Analysts noted that while Microsoft has taken a more measured approach to scaling its architecture, Alphabet’s recent quarterly results felt disorganized and lacked clear direction during its earnings call. For many shareholders, there is growing concern that Google has lost its competitive edge in the rush toward agentic AI.
