Honda Sounds Alarm Over Looming Trade War With Canada

The automotive industry is staring down a potentially devastating future if the United States and Canada fail to secure a new trade agreement by the end of the year. Jennifer Thomas, senior vice president of corporate affairs at American Honda Motor Co., described a proposed doubling of tariffs on Canadian vehicles and parts from 25 percent to 50 percent as a catastrophic scenario for the entire sector. Speaking at an automotive conference in Detroit, Thomas emphasized that such a move would jeopardize the competitiveness of the North American market.

The tension stems from President Donald Trump’s threats to hike levies on January 1 unless a deal is struck, following his claims that Canada has been taking advantage of the U.S. for years. While Honda has significant operations in Canada, it remains heavily integrated into the regional supply chain, where parts frequently cross borders multiple times during the production process. Thomas argued that a trilateral agreement involving Mexico, similar to the previous USMCA framework, is the only viable path forward to maintain stability across the continent.

Despite the looming deadline, there are some signs of progress that have left Thomas cautiously optimistic. Recent reports suggest that trade talks have resumed between Washington and Ottawa, including efforts to ease tariffs on essential materials like aluminum. However, she noted with concern that North American manufacturers could find themselves at a disadvantage compared to overseas competitors in Japan or South Korea, who often benefit from more favorable trade terms with the U.S. government.
