Berlin Bets on Big Tech to Bridge Public Funding Gap

Chancellor Friedrich Merz opened the Invest in Germany Summit in Berlin this Monday, launching a two day push to lure private capital into the national economy. With the government seeking ways to offset gaps in public spending, the event brought together around 200 executives from major domestic and global firms. A primary goal of the gathering is to revitalize Germany’s standing in the high tech landscape, particularly within the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence.

One of the most anticipated attendees is Jensen Huang, the CEO of US chip giant Nvidia. Given that Nvidia’s hardware sits at the heart of the current AI explosion, German officials view a strong partnership with the company as essential for catching up with global competitors. By courting such industry titans, Berlin hopes to spark a wave of innovation and infrastructure development that can sustain long term growth.

However, not everyone believes a promotional event is enough to shift the economic needle. Michael Hüther, director of the German Economic Institute, cautioned that investors prioritize profitability over prestige projects. He argued that systemic issues including high energy costs, burdensome bureaucracy, and expensive labor remain significant deterrents that cannot be solved overnight through a summit alone. According to Hüther, actual policy reforms would be far more persuasive than a red carpet welcome.

These concerns are backed by sobering data from Allianz Research, which indicates a widening gap between Germany and its peers. While investments surged by over twenty percent in the United States and grew steadily across the rest of the eurozone between 2019 and 2025, Germany saw its own investment levels slide by more than six percent during that same period. As the conference continues, critics argue that unless structural changes follow these discussions, foreign capital may continue to flow elsewhere.
