High Net Worth Investors Gamble on AI Despite Bubble Fears

Wealthy families managing their fortunes through family offices are increasingly diving into artificial intelligence, driven by a powerful sense of urgency. A recent survey from RBC Wealth Management and Campden Wealth reveals that eighty five percent of North American family offices now view AI as their primary investment theme. This surge in interest comes even though three quarters of those same investors believe an AI bubble will eventually burst within the next five years, suggesting a paradoxical approach to the current tech boom.

Bill Ringham, director of private wealth strategies at RBC, notes that even the most disciplined sources of patient capital are susceptible to the fear of missing out. While these investors typically take a generational view of wealth preservation, the rapid ascent of generative AI has created a psychological pressure to act quickly. For many, the risk of sitting on the sidelines during a historic technological shift outweighs the apprehension regarding inflated valuations.

This tension is evident when comparing short term excitement with long term conviction. Although AI dominates immediate priorities, respondents remain more bullish on traditional U.S. equities and direct investments when looking further down the road. According to Ringham, this indicates that while FOMO is steering current tactical moves, fundamental long term strategies are swinging back toward established assets. Real estate is also seeing a resurgence in appeal for those planning horizons beyond two years, showing that diversification remains key despite the glitter of Silicon Valley.

Beyond the potential for a market correction, these wealthy households are keeping a close eye on broader systemic risks. Excessive government borrowing emerged as the top concern among participants, closely followed by worries over job displacement caused by automation and the inevitable popping of the AI bubble. As they navigate this volatile landscape, many family offices are integrating AI exposure indirectly through private equity and venture capital, attempting to capture growth while keeping their eyes wide open to the volatility ahead.
