Hugging Face CEO on Anthropic researcher’s AI warning: ‘Like asking your AC guy about climate change’

A heated debate over the existential risks of artificial intelligence has taken a sharp turn toward personal critiques after Clement Delangue, the CEO of Hugging Face, dismissed warnings from a former Anthropic researcher. Writing on X, Delangue compared seeking insights on AI extinction from Jacob Coxon to asking an air conditioning technician for their take on global climate change. The comment comes in response to Coxon’s recent resignation and subsequent claim that developers at major labs like Anthropic and OpenAI are racing toward a superintelligence that could potentially wipe out humanity by the end of the decade.

Coxon insisted his warnings were not a marketing stunt but reflected genuine private fears among those building these systems. While some industry figures agree, including Anthropic’s own alignment science lead Evan Hubinger, who estimated a greater than ten percent chance of human extinction within ten years, others remain skeptical. Even Elon Musk weighed in on the controversy, suggesting that the narrative surrounding Coxon’s departure felt more like a coordinated psychological operation than a legitimate whistleblowing event.

Delangue later clarified that his analogy was not intended to discredit Coxon entirely but served as a reminder to maintain perspective. He argued that because Coxon primarily focused on pretraining rather than specialized risk research, his views represent only one slice of the technical landscape. According to Delangue, a truly robust conversation about the future of AI must incorporate voices beyond just researchers, including social scientists, policymakers, investors, and futurists.

The timing of this friction is particularly sensitive given the current state of market consolidation in the sector. With Nvidia recently announcing plans to acquire Hugging Face for nearly thirteen billion dollars, there is significant financial pressure to avoid regulatory lockdowns or sudden halts in development. For companies heavily invested in hardware and infrastructure, calls to slam the brakes on frontier AI development pose a direct threat to billions of dollars in projected growth.
