Dutch central bank moves 86 tonnes of gold to UK from US and Canada, citing ‘geopolitical unrest’

The Dutch central bank has shifted eighty six tonnes of its gold reserves from the United States and Canada to London, citing a rise in global geopolitical unrest. De Nederlandsche Bank explained that relocating these assets allows for much faster deployment during a potential crisis because the London market is significantly more liquid than those in New York or Ottawa. While President Olaf Sleijpen noted that the bank hopes it will never actually have to use these reserves in such a manner, he emphasized that the move was essential for strengthening national resilience and overall preparedness.

To execute the transition without incurring unnecessary risk or waste, the bank used a combination of strategic buying and selling alongside physical shipments. More than twenty seven tonnes of gold were transported from North America to Zeist before being forwarded to London, a method designed to avoid the costly process of melting down existing gold bars. This complex logistical operation took place between March and August, effectively redistributing the holdings so that London now accounts for over thirty two percent of the Dutch gold stock.

Industry experts suggest this trend reflects a broader pattern seen across several central banks over the last decade. Laurent Schwartz of the National Gold Counter pointed out that current political volatility within the United States may be prompting some nations to seek alternative storage hubs where they can more easily lend gold to other financial institutions. By prioritizing accessibility and speed, countries like the Netherlands are hedging against unpredictable shifts in international relations.

While analysts view this specific relocation as a relatively isolated event for now, some warn that similar movements by other major economies could eventually erode confidence in U.S.-based storage facilities. For instance, while Germany recently faced internal pressure regarding its own reserves held in New York, the Bundesbank has maintained terms with the Federal Reserve for the time being. Nevertheless, the Dutch decision serves as a clear signal of how modern central banks are weighing liquidity and political stability when managing billions in precious metals.
