Dutch central bank moves gold bars out of U.S. and Canada, citing ‘crisis preparedness’

The Dutch central bank has quietly relocated roughly 86 metric tons of gold from vaults in the United States and Canada to the United Kingdom, a move officials say is designed to bolster the nation’s crisis preparedness. Between March and August, just over a quarter of the reserves previously held in New York and Ottawa were moved to London. According to the De Nederlandsche Bank, these assets are now stored with the Bank of England, where they meet strict international trade standards that make them some of the most liquid and easily tradable gold reserves in existence.

Governor Olaf Sleijpen explained that while he hopes the country will never actually have to dip into these reserves, relocating them increases their overall resilience during periods of instability. He noted that gold held in North America could not be accessed or traded as quickly or directly during an emergency compared to holdings in London. By shifting these assets, the bank believes it has created a more balanced geographical distribution, with London now hosting about 32 percent of its reserves, followed closely by its own cash center in Zeist at nearly 31 percent.

This strategic shift comes at a time of heightened global tension and a significant surge in gold prices, which have climbed nearly 25 percent over the last year as investors flock to safe haven assets. Geopolitical friction remains high, particularly regarding U.S.-Iran relations and stability in the Strait of Hormuz. The decision also mirrors similar actions taken by other European powers; recently, France replaced 129 metric tons of gold held at the New York Federal Reserve, though French officials maintained at the time that such movements were not driven by political motivations.
